Building Networks for Behavioral Health Success
Accessing behavioral health services for a child is a journey that looks different for every family. Connecting with others can provide valuable support during this process.
One parent we spoke to first noticed behavioral health concerns in her son when he was about 5 years old. In addition to autism, he has a diagnosis of disruptive mood disorder. His behavior challenges included hitting, kicking and property damage, all becoming more difficult to manage at home and school.
The family lived in different states, ultimately moving to Arizona to access services. Before relocating, the parent spoke to a family support specialist with Encircle Families to become more familiar with available resources and the steps to access behavioral health support in Arizona. Once they settled in the northwest Valley, their family support specialist provided additional information and attended child and family team (CFT) meetings with his behavioral health team once they established care.
Their son is now a tween and receives residential services in a behavioral health group home. This setting provides the best, safest environment for him and for their family. “You need to think of your family and how behaviors can affect the entire family,” the parent said. “You also need to be your child’s advocate.” This approach helped the family make sometimes difficult decisions to best meet their son’s needs.
This parent also appreciates the support they received from Encircle Families and from parent groups. They suggest that other parents also connect with groups, especially when facing behavioral health concerns.
“It helps to be able to speak with someone about what to do and how to do it,” the parent said of accessing behavioral health support. “Find others who are in the same type of boat, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You don’t have to tell your whole story, but you can get a lot of information from other parents who’ve been there.”
Encircle Families can support caregivers by providing information and connections with other families facing similar scenarios.
Your donation helps ensure families navigating complex behavioral health journeys are not alone and can access trusted guidance, advocacy, and connection when they need it most.
