Kim and her family live in the East Valley, where their neighborhood school recently underwent changes that affected where students would attend.
The school her son attended, just a short walk from their home, announced it would be repurposed as a gifted-only program. Her son previously qualified for an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for developmental delays, and his eligibility category was later updated to autism when he was in first grade.
Between winter and spring break, the family learned he would need to attend a different school the following year.
“This caused a lot of anxiety,” Kim said. “We wondered whether the new school would have the services he needs. How will the transition look?”
Their family was offered a choice of schools. Kim connected with Family Support Specialist Laurie Shook at Encircle Families to talk through their options. She also spoke with a speech therapist who had previously worked at one of the schools they were considering.
After gathering information, the family chose a school and began the process of transferring his records.
At his new school, Kim’s son now receives resource room services for math and reading, along with speech therapy.
For families facing similar school changes, Kim encourages parents to ask questions and gather as much information as possible.
“If you are concerned, there are people who can answer your questions,” she said. “You can ask the current team, given what we know about how the child is doing, whether the new school will be the best choice for their needs.”
Even with information, changing schools can feel overwhelming for parents of students with IEPs or 504 plans. Kim said she was grateful for the chance to talk with Laurie and benefit from her knowledge of special education.
“I needed guidance, and now my son is thriving at the new school,” Kim said. “It was a very smooth transition.”
